Professor Shenggen Fan is a Chair Professor at China Agricultural University and the Director of the Academy of Global Food Economics and Policy (AGFEP). From 2009 to 2019, he served as the Director of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

Professor Fan has led extensive research in areas including public investment, global food and nutrition security, agricultural and rural development, poverty reduction, and agricultural food system transformation. His research has directly informed policy, notably providing strong evidence for increased rural road investment in India, which significantly reduced hunger and poverty levels. He has also provided policy advice to governments in China, Vietnam, and several African countries.

He serves on multiple boards and advisory committees, including as a Board Member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), African Green Revolution Alliance (AGRA), Global FoodBanking Network (GFN), Global Development Network (GDN), and the University of Central Asia. Additionally, he is a member of the Advisory Board for the World Food Prize and the Oxford Martin School Advisory Committee.

Professor Fan is a Fellow of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) and an Honorary Life Member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE). His awards include the Distinguished Alumni and International Leadership Awards in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota (2006), the Hunger Hero Award from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (2014), and the Fudan Management Award for Outstanding Contribution (2017) in recognition of his achievements in management and leadership.
