Food Security Update
  • A total of 228,635 MT worth of commodities, including wheat, maize, soybean, and sunflower meal, were shipped to Egypt, Kenya and Tunisia in June 2023. 
  • High fuel and food prices continue to limit purchasing power in East Africa.
  • Increased market supplies from the recent harvest are stabilizing prices and driving improved food security outcomes in Southern Africa.
  • In West Africa, food prices remain above average despite declines in some markets.

Food Trade

  • About 200 trucks loaded with rice and maize seeds are barred by Tanzania from crossing into Uganda through the Mutukula one-stop border post.
  • Mozambique commits to submitting its tariff offer to the AfCFTA by June this year.
  • Ghana Revenue Authority announces the introduction of a 12.5% upfront payment on the customs values of VAT registerable imports different entry ports.

Commodity Prices

  • Food commodities remains generally expensive in Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Uganda, while prices are mixed in Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania. 
  • In Southern Africa, food commodity prices fall as the harvest period peaks.
  • In West Africa, commodities are still expensive in Ghana and Nigeria, but the prices are lower in Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, and Togo.
