What began in a modest kitchen in Mbeya with just TZS 100,000 (USD 40) has evolved into a thriving agribusiness — and a source of dignity, income, and inspiration.
Agnes Nzowa, the founder of Huno Afya Plus, is redefining what’s possible for young women in Tanzania’s agri-food system.
Agnes’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2022, following a series of local exhibitions. While they exposed her to the potential of value-added agriculture, they also revealed the barriers — especially for women with limited capital or formal training. Motivated to create a better future for her family, she made the leap from housewife to businesswoman.
Her turning point came when AGRA’s implementing partner Rikolto connected her with the YEFFA program. Through YEFFA, Agnes received comprehensive training in entrepreneurship, capital mobilization, and product development. “The first thing AGRA gave me was knowledge,” she reflects. “And from that knowledge, I found the courage to start.”
With newly acquired skills and support, she scaled her banana chip and peanut butter production — quickly gaining visibility in local stores and supermarkets. In 2023, Agnes earned a net profit of TZS 3 million (USD 1,150) from banana chips alone. That income not only supported her family but enabled her to create casual employment opportunities, particularly for young people in her community.

Operating from the Food Pack Centre in Mbeya, Agnes now plans to expand into Iringa, Dodoma, and Morogoro. Her business also plays a critical role in reducing post-harvest banana losses — extending shelf life, cutting waste, and contributing to more sustainable food systems at a time when global food loss is expected to double by 2030.
Despite her success, Agnes acknowledges ongoing hurdles — particularly around packaging and brand differentiation. “It’s hard to stand out,” she admits. Yet with the knowledge, confidence, and ecosystem support she’s gained, Agnes is determined to build a brand that reaches national markets and to inspire others to turn small beginnings into big opportunities.
