  1. Background

Established in 2006, AGRA is an African-led, Africa-based and farmer-centered institution working to put smallholder farmers at the center of the continent’s growing economy by transforming their farming from a solitary struggle to survive to a business that thrives.

Working in collaboration with our partners—including African governments, researchers, development partners, the private sector and civil society— AGRA’s work primarily focuses on smallholder farmers – men and women who typically cultivate staple crops on two hectares or less.

In the current strategy, AGRA is supporting 11 African countries and 30 million smallholder farm households to increase their incomes and improve their food security. Under this strategy, AGRA will deliver through an approach that simultaneously catalyses change at farmer level, strengthens input and output market systems and puts government at the centre to enable and champion private-sector-led agricultural growth at national level.

  • Objective

We are looking for 3 consultant Writers that will complement our in-house capabilities and capacity to deliver a world class communication function to support the delivery of our mandate.

  • Duties and Responsibilities
  • Planning:
  • Discuss with the communications team and the senior management to have the best understanding of writing requirements;
  • Pinpoint relevant content themes and create compelling content that will resonate with target audiences;
  • Undertake in-depth research to identify key trends to inform the production of thought leadership pieces
  1. Generating Content:
  2. Commission and edit news and feature stories for on African agriculture, reflecting AGRA’s communications priorities and key messages and liaising with the AGRA communications team.
  3. Write, edit and create compelling Op-eds, fact sheets, white papers, blogs and any other content;
  4. Repurpose content as needed;
  5. Ensure all content is on-brand, consistent in terms of style, quality and tone of voice, and optimized for search and user experience for all channels of content including online, social media, email, video, print (whitepapers, case studies, fact sheets) and in-person.
  1. Content Review:
  2. Work with owners of particular content to review and sign-off
  3. Conduct ongoing usability tests to gauge content effectiveness.

  4. Sound political judgment and highly developed inter-personal skills;
  5. Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  6. Ability to quickly adjust priorities to respond to pressing demands.
  7. Strong judgement, including ethical and political awareness.
  8. Excellent communication and writering skills.
  9. Strong understanding of the global media environment, including grasp of social media.
  • General Requirements:
  • Highly developed writing and editing skills.
  • Proven ability to produce incisive, thought provoking and in-depth pieces.
  • Experience working in sensitive and fast-moving news, communications, advocacy and/or fundraising contexts.
  • Proven ability to conceptualize, plan and execute ideas as well as transfer knowledge and skills.
  • Excellent written, oral and comprehension command of English. Knowledge of French is an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously with a sense of urgency;
  • Required Skills and Experience
  • Education: 

Master’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, political science, international relations or a related field.

  1. Job Experience:
  2. Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in journalism, communications, marketing or development work. Bachelor’s degree holders with extra 2 years’ experience are eligible to apply.
  3. Proven ability to act with discretion and diplomacy.
  4. Excellent communication and writing skills.
  5. Strong understanding of the global media environment.
  • Language Requirements: 

Fluency in oral and demonstrated superior writing skills in English is required. Knowledge in French is an added advantage.

  • Duration:

The assignment will last for a period of Twelve (12) months, AGRA will sign framework contract  with successful candidates and work will be assigned on a need basis.

  • Reporting arrangements

The consultant shall report to the Head of communication who will assign all activities under the contract and approve all deliverables and invoices.

NB:

  • Only the 3 candidates with the best technical proposals (>75%) shall be considered for financial negotiations

The proposal should include:

  1. Technical Proposal
  2. Detailed Curriculum Vitae
  3. Detailed reference list indicating the scope and magnitude of similar assignments carried out
  4. Demonstrate possession of qualification and experience required
  5. Provide methodology, work plan and understanding of the assignment
  • Financial Proposal
  • The consultant shall provide a daily rate for carrying out the assignment
  • The consultant may also propose additional pricing options or modalities for consideration.
  • Price must be quoted in US Dollars (USD)
  • All applicable taxes (withholding taxes) should be quoted separately
  • If the financial proposal is silent on taxes, AGRA shall assume that these are inclusive;
  • Reimbursable costs if applicable shall be quoted separately.
  • The financial proposal shall be submitted separately from the technical proposal and should be password protected. Only the best 3 candidates meeting the minimum technical score (>75%) shall be requested for the password to their financial proposal
  1. for Preparations and Submission of Proposals
  1. The proposals SHALL be submitted to procurement@agra.org by deadline indicated in the synopsis
  2. The proposal and ALL Attachments submitted via email SHALL NOT exceed 10MB
  3. VALIDITY of the proposal shall be for a period of 90 days from the date of bid closure.
  4. Financial proposal shall be sent as a separate attachment and MUST be password protected.
