On July 25, Vice Minister Qu Dongyu met with H.E. Mr.Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, previous President of the United Republic of Tanzania and Board Member of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), in Beijing. They exchanged views in the areas of strengthening cooperation between the two sides and pushing forward African agricultural development. Dr. Agnes Kalibata, President of AGRA and previous Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources of Rwanda, attended the meeting.
Qu extended his welcome to Mr. Kikwete’s visit to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China and appreciated his long-term friendship with China. Qu also introduced China-Africa agricultural cooperation and experience in promoting African agricultural development upon request. According to Qu, the Chinese side is willing to sign a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding on agricultural cooperation with the African Union and AGRA in order to strengthen pragmatic cooperation in areas of agricultural policy exchanges, technology experiments and demonstration as well as South-South cooperation in pursuit of boosting African agricultural transformation and improving food security in Africa.
Mr. Kikwete fully agreed with suggestions proposed by the Chinese side and expressed that the singing of the tripartite Memorandum of Understanding on agricultural cooperation mentioned above should be actively promoted. At the same time, various resources would be integrated and innovative forms of cooperation should be created in order to promote African agricultural development.
