Chapter 3 – Growing impacts of shocks on Sub-Saharan Africa’s agri-food system and the mitigating role of resilience
Key Messages
1
Unless effectively addressed today, the growing incidence of conflict and climate shocks and the prevalence of health, economic and other shocks and stressors will likely slow down Africa’s economic transformation and progress toward sustainable development. There is a high probability of major adverse effects of these shocks and stressors on agriculture, food security, poverty reduction, and other important economic outcome measures. 2
Strategies to build resilience can help mitigate the effects of these shocks and stressors and develop the resilience capacities of households, communities, and countries thereby contributing to the transformation agenda. 3
Policy options to build resilience include enhancing the security of supply chains, building early warning systems, developing insurance markets, protecting productive assets, and providing humanitarian relief after a natural or man-made disaster has occurred.
