Gerald Nakhungu in his finger millet farm in Matungo, Mumias, Kenya, on 22nd July 2016. Switching from farming sugar cane to millet has brought higher returns with every harvest. Gerald's three children are now in private schools, he has opened a mobile phone and motorcycle taxi business, and grows trees for sale as building materials. AGRA supported the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation's program to develop 'maridadi' finger millet which Gerald and other farmers grow. Maridadi has up to 500% higher yields than previously planted breeds.
