CHENNAI: Renowned agricultural scientist from Mozambique and World Food Prize 2016 laureate Dr Maria Isabel Andrade was honoured with the ‘Dr M.S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection 2017’ by the RotaryClub of Madras East (RCME), at an event in Chennai, on Tuesday.
The award, according to a statement, is presented to an individual, company or NGO which has contributed directly or indirectly, “to heightening environmental protection and awareness, in any part of the world.”
It was presented in the presence of M S Swaminathan, founder-chairman of the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF). Rotarians R Srinivasan, RI district governor, B S Purshotham, president of RCME, C K Ranganathan, CMD of CavinKare, and industrialist S Abhaya Kumar Jain were present.
“This award is to recognise Dr Maria Andrade‘s significant contribution as an agronomist for well over three decades. Her dedication and hard work has made the development of root and tuber crop in Africa impacting millions of farmers. Her work at the Sweet Potato Action for Security and Health in Africa (SASHA) Southern Platform, bringing together sweet potato breeders from various African countries, has served to heighten visibility and impact in Sub-Saharan Africa,” Purshotham said.
Dr Maria Andrade is a member of the AGRA Board.
